Offsite Backup
I'm looking for an offsite backup solution to store the important files on my home work station. We use some high end backup software at work for backing up all the servers, but I'm looking for something pretty small scale or preferably even free. I was thinking of writting a little java app that would monitor set locations and upload the files via ftp if there was any changes, but that's probably going to be a bit too much work and I couldn't really be bothered. :) I'm sure there must be some kind of simple utilities or providers that would supply this service in Australia.
I found one mob called http://www.idrive.net.au/ ... thier pricing and software looks like it would do everything i need. The only reservation i have about backing up over the net is that my bandwidth usage is going to go through the roof. Some kind of byte level incremental backup would be the go, but even then i'm not sure if it would take up too much bandwidth. Maybe, I should just get an old linux box and put it in the garage. It's not offsite, but it would be another option.
Update: This thread on whirlpool forums has some good links. http://www.orbitfiles.com/ and http://www.box.net/ look pretty good with 1Gb free plans.
Update2: Ok. I just gave orbitfiles.com a shot and let me just say it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. The backup utility was very basic, only allowing you to upload/backup specific files. I'm really looking for something that will allow me to backup an entire directory atblock level without having to think about it too much.

I have a free Earthlink account I don't use - so I just zip and FTP stuff there once a week.
I asked a similar question a while back, check out the comments at http://www.forta.com/blog/index.cfm?mode=entry&entry=A61BC60B-3048-80A9-...

This is something I've been looking into recently as well. At first I was concerned about having my private data held on someone elses server and was going to resort to using rsynch to synch specific folders with a dedicated server offsite.
I came across this post
http://www.lifehacker.com/software/geek-to-live/geek-to-live-automatical...
and some of the comments suggested some other sites:
www.strongspace.com
www.foldershare.com
www.mirra.com
I heard good things about xdrive.com but after reading the user forums and all the complaints of support not responding to emails I crossed them off my list.
Ideally I'd like a service which encrypted my data on the remote server.
Hey Jason,
Get onto Myspace.com and build up friends!!!
Take care,

Cheers Guz,
I'll have a look.
You da man Gus. Mozy is exactly what I was looking for. It includes 2Gb of free storage. It does incremental backups, the backup utility is friendly and it also encrypts your data...very cool.
Thanks Ben, I remember reading your post a while back, but it completely slipped my mind. Well maybe not completely... It was probably the trigger that started the little voice inside nagging me to start backing up off site. :) Which solution did you end up going for?
Kola, check out mozy.com .. it does encryption. You can even specify your own encryption key.
